Movement makes pictures in space
In dance, a body can travel, turn, stretch, curl or freeze. These choices make an invisible picture that people can see for a moment. A wide reach can feel open, while a small curl can feel hidden or careful.
Why use the space?
A dance would be hard to see if every movement happened in one tiny spot. People have always used movement to show animals, weather, feelings and journeys without needing many words. Changing direction or distance solves the problem of making an action visible.
Show a seed growing
Begin curled low like a seed. Slowly straighten your back and lift your arms as if a stem is reaching for the sun. Open your hands like leaves, then stand tall and still. The change from small and low to wide and high tells the story.
Fast is not the only way
It is tempting to keep moving quickly because movement feels exciting and stops can feel like doing nothing. But a pause, a slow stretch or a quiet turn can show waiting, growing or wondering. Stillness is part of the dance, not an empty mistake.
Movement tells stories without words
Dance is used on stages, in celebrations, films and playground games. A performer may move towards someone to show friendship, turn away to show disagreement or cross the floor to show a journey. The meaning comes from the whole action and its situation.
