Use by or best before? — Fair Trade Lane · Demand & Supply
Grandpa Tomé runs the shop on Fig Street. Lots of food is thrown away because people mix up two kinds of date labels. Help him explain them on a sign.
Your task
Sort each label: is it about safety (use by) or about quality (best before)?
- Use by is about safety: after that date the food should not be eaten, even if it looks fine. Best before is about quality: after it, the food may be a little less crisp or tasty, but is often still safe if it was stored as the label says.
- Invented stories to learn from. Prices and shops in them are made up, and this is not financial advice. Ask a trusted adult before buying or selling anything for real.
- Never share personal or payment details online. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Understanding trade — You understood how this part of trade works.
- Wise choices — You weighed your options before choosing.
- Fair play — You treated buyers and sellers fairly.
In real life
Many countries use these two date labels. Mixing them up is one reason good food gets thrown away. When in doubt about a food, ask a trusted adult and never eat anything after its use by date.
