The modern Summer Olympics began in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and usually happen every four years. The chart steps four years at a time.
The 1916, 1940 and 1944 Games were cancelled because of world wars, and the Tokyo 2020 Games were held in 2021.
Countries are named as they are today, with two exceptions to know: Munich 1972 was hosted by West Germany, and Moscow 1980 by the Soviet Union.
