What can we learn?
- Everest, at 8,849 m, is the highest mountain above sea level. All ten here are over 8,000 m, and only fourteen mountains on Earth reach that.
- They all stand in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges in Asia, around Nepal, China, India and Pakistan.
- At those heights the air pressure is about a third of the pressure at sea level, so there is much less oxygen to breathe and climbers often carry extra.
