Here “electric cars” means cars you plug in: fully battery-powered ones and plug-in hybrids. An electric car has nothing coming out of its exhaust pipe when it drives on its battery.
France had the most in 2010, the United States led from 2012 and China has led since 2016. In 2024 China had about five times as many as the United States.
The number on the road grows slowly at first and then very fast. That pattern is called exponential growth.
