Bananas, Bananas!
Bananas grown by each country, from 1961 to 2024
What can we learn?
- Banana plants look like trees but are really giant herbs: they have no wood, only layers of leaf bases wrapped around each other.
- India has led since 1983 and in 2024 grew about 37.6 million tonnes, but most of its bananas are eaten at home.
- Ecuador is a different story: it grows fewer but sells many to other countries, and it is the world's top banana exporter.
